Ellis County unemployment rate increases in July

The unemployment rate in Ellis County increased .3% from 3.4% in June to 3.7% in July, according to the Kansas Department of Labor.

The rates in Gove were up .3%, Trego up .5% and Russell County's unemployment rate was up to 4.5%.

Most northwest counties saw slight increases in their unemployment rate in July, with Graham and Osborne seeing the highest increase at about 1% each.

The Ellis County rate is up compared to the 3% rate reported in July 2024.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% statewide in July. This is unchanged from 3.8% in June and an increase from 3.7% in July 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 66.9% in July.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 4,300 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 700 over the month, while government decreased by 5,000. The largest job gains in the private sector were in trade, transportation and utilities (+1,300 jobs). The largest decrease was in leisure and hospitality (-900 jobs).

Since July 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 3,300. This change is due to an increase of 5,100 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,800 government jobs.
