🤼Three Hays High Indians headed to state tournament

Three Hays High wrestlers are headed to state wrestling next week after finishing in the top four at sub-state this week.

Hays High’s Sarah Zimmerman finished 2nd Friday at 109 pounds and is the lone Indians qualifier for the girls 5A state tournament while Harley Zimmerman finished 2nd at 126 pounds and Gavin Meyers remained unbeaten with a first-place finish at 220 pounds Saturday in Goddard.

At the girls Division 1 sub-state Friday at Wichita Heights Sarah Zimmerman finished 2-1 and was second at 109 pounds.

Zimmerman opened the tournament with back-to-back falls. But lost by a fall in the third period to Dialeen French of Wichita-North in the championship match. Zimmerman will enter next week’s 5A girls state tournament with a record of 25-4.

At the 5A boys sub-state tournament in Goddard Hays’ Harley Zimmerman finished 2-1 and in second place at 126 pounds.

He opened the tournament with a third period fall over David Tucker of Emporia and then followed that with a 7-3 win over LaShawn Blick of Andover. In the championship match Zimmerman was shutout in a 9-0 loss to unbeaten Alyeus Craig of Valley Center. Zimmerman is 18-5 on the season.

At 220 pounds Hays’ Gavin Meyers improved to 23-0 as he claimed the individual title.

Meyers opened the tournament with a first period fall over Henry Buresh of Bishop Carroll. He followed that up with a 6-2 win over Ashton Ngo of Andover. Then in the championship match her earned another first period fall, this time it was over Noah Redcorn of Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Meyers is ranked 2nd in 5A at 220 pounds.

The girls 5 and 6A state wrestling tournament will be Thursday, Feb. 25 at Hartman Area in Park City.

The 5A boys state tournament is Friday, Feb. 26 at Hartman Area.
