Ida Alice (Madden) Montgomery, 98, died Sunday, March 21, 2021, at the
Graham County Hospital, Hill City, Kansas. She was born to Harry and
Thressa (Keith) Madden in the family home which was attached to their
grocery store in Studley, Kansas. When Gene was about three years old,
the family moved to their farm south of Studley. Janice and Marcille
were born at the farm. Ida Alice’s grade school years were spent at
Studley. She went on to high school in Hoxie, Kansas and later earned
her GED.
Ida Alice was united in marriage to Walter Hines, June 4, 1940. To
this union two children were born: Anita and Bill. Shortly after their
wedding, the couple moved to Colorado. It was during this time that Ida
Alice worked in the ammunitions plant in Golden, Colorado making bullets
for the war effort.
During the 60’s, she managed a fabric shop in Springfield,
Missouri. She later moved to Colorado Springs working at a Sears in the
lingerie, wig, and cosmetics departments. Due to her mother’s failing
health, she relocated to Hill City in 1974. She worked for 14 years at
Dawson Place, initially with patient care and retiring as a medical
clerk and social worker.
A very important date in Ida Alice’s life was November 25, 1951
when she was baptized at First Christian Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Later, she transferred her membership
to Lincoln Terrace Christian Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
On March 28, 1989, Ida Alice married Jim Montgomery. The couple
made their home in Hill City, enjoying their retirement years together
until Jim’s death in 2009.
Ida Alice was never one to sit idle. Her hands liked to keep
busy, whether it was sewing for her family and friends, creating counted
cross stitch pieces and of course she loved to make quilts. There were
times when she even dabbled in painting. Ida Alice was seldom seen not
impeccably dressed, not a hair out of place looking very neat and put
together. So be sure she was extremely particular with her handcrafting.
Ida Alice was also an avid collector. At any one time she was found
either collecting clowns, rocking horses, birds, angels, or snowmen.
And somehow there was always time for Pinochle. She rarely
missed her Pinochle Club and Sunday afternoons found Ida Alice, Janice
and Laura playing three-handed Pinochle. Later in the week another
Pinochle Day and lunch with Janice and Anita.
Ida Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands;
brother Eugene Madden; sister Marcille Currier; grandson, Eddie Best;
and brothers-in-law: Don Currier and Albert (Dutch) Richmeier.
Left with beautiful memories of Ida Alice are her son Bill
(Harvette) Hines of Lebanon, Missouri; her daughter, Anita Bock of Smith
Center; grandchildren: Christian Hines, Danita (Mike) Jones, Judy Best;
great grandchildren: B.J. Franks, Cameron and Caleb Schompert;
