RUSSELL - The TMP-Marian volleyball team upended top-seeded Phillipsburg to win the Russell 3A Sub-State and advance to next week's state quarterfinals.
The Monarchs (30-7) defeated the seventh-ranked Panthers 25-19, 25-20. They will host Goodland Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The Cowgirls were the No. 1 seed and won the Scott City Sub-State.
The winner advances to the four-team 3A state tournament Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Monarchs beat Russell 25-11, 25-17 in the opening round then avenged their loss in last year's sub-state finals to Beloit with a 25-23, 25-21 win over the Trojans in the semifinals.
