HAYS – The Hoxie Indians boys wrestling team continues to have a stranglehold on the 3-2-1A state wrestling championship, while the Russell girls close out a record season with the program’s first state title.
The Indians had 10 medal winners, including two individual champions and two runner-up finishers as they recorded 196.5 points, 97.5 more than second-place Caney Valley and Atchison County who tied with 99 team points.
Norton was fourth with 92.5.
The Hoxie boys tied with Southeast of Saline and Council Grove for the most individual champions.
Hoxie’s Bradyn Wilson claimed the title at 113 pounds and Ian Giancola at 132 pounds.
Giancola finishes his career as a three-time state champion.
Ten of the 11 wrestlers Hoxie qualified for state earned a top-six finish.
Other area champions included Phillipsburg’s Blake Buresh at 157 pounds and Smith Center’s Parker Hutchinson at 165 pounds.
The Russell girls led all teams with four individual champions, clinching the school's first state championship in any sport since 1979.
Arianna Weigel (120), Averie Counts (130), Kinsey Zorn (145) and Aallyah Trevino (155) all earned first-place finishes.
Norton also recorded multiple state title winners: Kaison Miller (125), Halle Pfannenstiel (140) and Adriana Winters (235).
The Plainville girls had one champion, Lillian Garcia at 170 pounds and three runner-up finishers: Kaeleigh Klein (100), Hayden Staab (135) and Caydance Carter (190).
The Cardinals finished fourth behind Russell, Norton and Oakley.
