Fire weather watch issued for Hays, surrounding area

Hays is under a fire weather watch from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The effect is for wind and low relative humidity. Affected counties include Ellis, Scott, Lane, Ness, Rush, Hodgeman, Pawnee, Stafford, Edwards, Kiowa and Pratt.

Before a cold front, west to southwest winds are expected to be 15 to 25 mph. After the cold front passes, northwest winds are expected to be 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

A fire weather watch means critical fire weather conditions are forecast. 

The high in Hays today is forecast at 94 degrees with a low of 58. Tomorrow's forecast is for highs in the 80s and sunny.
