HAYS — The TMP-Marian Monarchs and the Hays High softball teams had to wait an extra day and dealt with rainy conditions Friday as the two teams split a doubleheader at TMP.
GAME 1: Hays 10, TMP 6
The Indians used three three-run innings and held off a late TMP rally to win the first game, 10-6.
After a scoreless first inning, Hays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Brynlee Brous recorded her first of three singles in the game and then scored two batters later on an error by TMP.
The Monarchs answered in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Emma Wasinger, putting TMP up 2-1.
Hays wasted little time responding, scoring three times in the top of the third inning for a 4-2 lead.
The Indians scored on an error, an RBI groundout by Brooklynn Dinkel and a Brous single.
Hays added three more runs in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch and adding two runs on a pair of TMP errors for a 7-2 lead.
The Monarchs were held scoreless until the sixth inning, when they broke through with four runs to pull within one at 7-6.
TMP scored on a passed ball, a walk and a two-run single by Brynn Rebel.
In the top of the seventh, Hays added three insurance runs, scoring on a bases-loaded walk, an RBI single by Lanie Becker and a passed ball to secure the 10-6 win.
The loss ended TMP’s 18-game winning streak and snapped Hays High’s three-game losing streak.
Paige Koenigsman and Adison Watson each collected two hits for the Monarchs. Brynn Rebel drove in two runs.
Rebel also suffered her first loss of the season (9-1), allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on eight hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.
Hays’ Brynlee Brous went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Jaylee Summers earned the win (4-7), allowing two unearned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
GAME 2: TMP 4, Hays 1
TMP starter Bria Windholz allowed one run over seven innings, and Brynn Rebel homered as the Monarchs claimed a 4-1 win in Game 2.
Windholz and Hays starter Avery Raymer traded scoreless innings into the fourth before Rebel connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, putting TMP up 2-0.
The Monarchs added two more runs on a pair of Hays errors in the fifth.
Hays’ only real threat came in the sixth, when it scored a run on an error, but TMP held on for the 4-1 victory.
Windholz improved to 8-0, allowing just one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Raymer allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits in six innings and took the loss.
Rebel collected two hits and drove in two runs for TMP.
Raymer also tallied a pair of hits for Hays High.
TMP (19-1) will host Sacred Heart on Monday.
