Triple Eight Equine in Hays has opened its outdoor arena for community events and to improve experiences for horses and riders.

The equine center, 1380 Toulon Ave., offers horse services and accommodates travelers with horses passing through the area.

Co-owner Brian Lang said the facility held a team roping event on Sept. 21 to highlight its new additions and services.

"One part of the event is to show people what we have to offer," Lang said. "We try to have a safe arena, facilities and so forth."

The new expansion to the center fosters activities and community involvement while improving health and educational services.

The services range from beginner to advanced riding lessons and horse rehabilitation therapy.

The arena is also for community activities, such as the recent team roping event celebrating Peter Weber's 80th birthday.

Peter is a long-time respected roper within the roping community. The celebration in his honor marks the first of many in the outdoor arena.

"We will do more barrel racing events. We're looking at more roping and ranch rodeo events," Lang said.

Triple Eight Equine also includes a 24-stalls for horses participating in the facility's therapy program and travelers with horses.

While horses are housed overnight, owners can relax in one of two bunk rooms designed for travelers. The facility is equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, shower and lounge.

"Some people stay in their trailers, but if they've been on the road for a long time, they can get out and stretch," Lang said.

Lang said the facility is considering adding a horse surgery center with its existing health and therapy services, namely its water treadmill.

"It's a lot easier to teach the horse balance in there because there's no rider on it. It strengthens the anatomy of the horse as well," he said.

The water treadmill is uncommon, with only a limited number available nationwide and even fewer in Kansas.

Lang has a background in agricultural equipment and was involved in starting the center in 2022.

"A horse can sense your heartbeat from four feet away. ... I truly believe a horse can look into your soul," he said.

An open house is planned for the near future to showcase the facility and its offerings further, giving the community the opportunity for people to learn more about the center.
