The Fort Hays State University Foundation has created a fund for the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.
The university is facing $2.4 million in budget cuts from the Kansas Legislature.
Last year, the subsidy to the museum was $855,990. In addition, the Sternberg has about $20 million in deferred maintenance.
The public closure of the museum is set to take effect on Dec. 18. The foundation is trying to raise at least $855,000 by Dec. 31.
As of this morning, the foundation has already raised $30,580.

“Sternberg is more than a museum. It is a true gem that makes Hays and northwest Kansas unique. We are fortunate to have an institution of this caliber right here in our own backyard—and we cannot take it for granted,” the foundation said on its website.
If fundraising falls short of the goal, the money raised will be used where it’s needed most to support Sternberg’s collections and its educational mission for the life of the institution.
