🎾 FHSU's Alfonso wins No. 1 singles, Tigers fall at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell to Northeastern State in a conference match on Friday by a score of 6-1. Irina Alfonso generated the lone team point for FHSU by winning her match at No. 1 singles. FHSU is now 6-11 overall and 0-7 in the MIAA, while NSU moved to 5-12, 1-4 in the MIAA.

Northeastern State clinched the doubles team point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The No. 1 FHSU team of Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz forced a tiebreak that ultimately decided the team point, going the way of NSU 7-2 after playing to a 6-6 tie in the set. The No. 3 FHSU team of Aliyah Frederick and Nicole Heyn were victorious 6-2.

Alfonso played well for FHSU, winning her match at the No. 1 position 6-4, 6-3. Maria Paz Diaz (No. 3) and Fiorella Mendez (No. 4) fell by the exact same scores. Kylie Aufdengarten won six games within her match at No. 5 and Nicole Heyn took one game in her match at No. 2. Aliyah Frederick had the longest match of the day at the No. 6 position, forcing a third-set tiebreak game by winning the second set 7-5. She came up short in that tiebreak game, 10-4.

The Tigers have two more matches on their regular season schedule. They travel to Bethel College in Newton on Wednesday (Apr. 20), then host Missouri Western in Hays on Saturday (Apr. 23).
