ELLIS — About 70 Girl Scouts and their leaders participated in the first part of a three-part campout last Saturday and Sunday in Ellis.
The Junior Scouts, ages 9 and 10, from across northwest Kansas learned basic camping skills, including tent set up, fire building, knot tying, outdoor cooking, knife safety and first aid.
The girls will learn more skills and take more responsibility for their camp duties as they progress through the three parts of the camping program.
The second part of the campout will be in June in Atwood. The third part of the campout will be in August in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The campout is sponsored by Girl Scout Unit 74 of which Ellis County is a part.
