Hays High opened Western Athletic Conference play against Great Bend on Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium. The Indians won the 2020 title, their first since 2014.
Hays possessed the ball seven times and scored on all seven possessions of the first half. An errant snap on a Great Bend punt led to a safety for a 51-0 lead after the first two quarters. A continuous clock second half kept the score the same as Hays ran through a large majority of their roster.

Highlights

The Hays defense held Great Bend to minus nine yards 

Roy Maroni started the scoring frenzy with a 25 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game. Hays opened in excellent field position on a long kickoff return by Jordan Dale.

Malik Bah doubled the score with a one yard scoring run in the first quarter. Jaren Kanak connected on pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter for a 28-0 score. Jordan Dale and Kyrese Groen were the recipients of the two scoring passes.

Hays added 23 more points in the second quarter. Maroni scored from 23 yards, Great Bend sailed a punt snap out of the end zone, Kanak hit Kiefer for a 20 yard score and Kanak busted a 79 yard run for six points.

Hays totaled 360 yards in the game. 327 yards from the first half.

Hays improves to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in the WAC. Great Bend is 0-2 and 0-1. The Indians take their first road trip of the season, heading to Liberal next Friday.
