Donald L. “Donnie” Phelps, age 75, died Tuesday, May
11, 2021, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born
September 27, 1945, in Lakin, Kansas, the son of Jeff W. and Dorothy
(Ansel) Phelps.
Donnie grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Grant County Rural High
School. He married Peggy Watie on May 27, 1967, in Ulysses. For many
years, Donnie was an active member of the Ulysses Bit & Spur Club,
served on the Grant County Fair Board for numerous years, served on the
Grant County Extension Council, was a 4-H Leader, and coached kids
sports. He was currently employed at Lucas Farms of Johnson and had
previously been a long-time cowboy. Donnie was a team roper, and
supported his family and extended family in all of their activities. He
was often heard saying “That will cost you a quarter."
Donnie is survived by his wife, Peggy of their home; son, Brandon Phelps
and fiancé Paula Ybarra of Ulysses; daughter, Susanne Brazeal and wife
Melissa of Ulysses; brother, Jerald Phelps and wife Sharon of Ulysses;
sister, Kay Spangler and husband Larry of Bethany, Oklahoma;
grandchildren, Britley Sierra and wife Sophia of Ulysses, Brance Phelps
and Kiva of Hays, Bravane Phelps and wife Tiana of Ulysses, Brady Valdez
of Menard, Texas, Taydon Phelps and fiancé Krysta Wedel of Salina, and
Gracelynn Phelps of Ulysses; four great-grandsons; Kaden, Hitan, Easton,
and Harris Donald; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donnie is preceded in death by his parents; infant sons; daughter,
Shannan Valdez; and granddaughters, Sha Ane Valdez and Ezri Chavez
Ybarra.
Funeral service will be Saturday, May 15, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Grant
County Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena in Ulysses, Kansas, with Minister Warren
Baldwin officiating. The service will also be live streamed on Garnand
Funeral Home Facebook page. Interment will follow at the Ulysses
Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, May 14, 2021, from 2:00 PM until
8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
