HAYS — Construction and composites technology educator Melanie McMillan officially filed on Thursday, May 28, to run for the Kansas House of Representatives in District 111.
A proud Kansas resident for more than two decades, McMillan has dedicated much of her career to education and workforce development. She previously worked as an industry trainer at WSU Tech, where she taught aircraft manufacturing, and currently serves in the construction department at Fort Hays Tech North Central.
“I have always been passionate about not only growing my own skill set in manufacturing and construction, but also passing that knowledge on to the next generation,” McMillan said. “I work alongside the backbone of our community every day, and we are all facing the same challenges when it comes to rising costs and making ends meet.”
McMillan says her campaign will focus on lowering costs for working families, supporting public education and technical training, and ensuring rural Kansas communities have a strong voice in Topeka.
“The people of Hays deserve representation that fights for them at the Capitol, not for the wealthy and well-connected,” McMillan said. “Families are worried about grocery prices, housing costs, healthcare, and building a secure future. Kansans want leaders focused on solving real problems, not fueling political distractions.”
McMillan emphasized that her background in education and skilled trades gives her a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing working Kansans and the importance of investing in local communities
