McCOOK, Neb. – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team got their final tune-up before next week’s zone tournament in Great Bend with a doubleheader sweep of the McCook Senior American Legion, 8-1 and 15-2 in four innings Wednesday. The Eagles never trailed in either game as they ran their winning streak to 10 and improved to 17-4.
Hays scored two in the top of the first on singles from Garrett Wellbrock and Carson Spray. They added two more in the third on sacrifice flies from Spray and Remington Cox. After scoring run in the fifth, the Eagles put the game away with a three-run sixth. Ben Krannawitter and Brady Kreutzer both scored on errors by the McCook catcher then Spray singled to drive in Wellbrock.
Blake Schmidt (4-0)and Carson Spray combine to allow on run on eight hits in the opener. Schmidt gave up six hits and the one run with two strikeouts and two walks over four innings and picked up the win. Spray followed with three scoreless innings of relief for his first save.
The Eagles scored five runs in each of the first three innings in the second game, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter in the first, three walks in the second and a walk and two errors in the third.
Garrett Wellbrock (5-2) allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks over two innings and picked up the win in game two. Dalton Dale pitched a hitless inning of relief. Brady Kreutzer allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout in the final inning.
The Eagles are off until next week’s zone tournament hosted by Great Bend. Brackets won’t be out until the Chiefs play their final doubleheader on Friday.
