Hays home damaged in early morning fire Thursday

At approximately 3:30 a.m. Thursday, the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire located at 309 W. 21st in Hays.

One of the occupants of the home noticed smoke in the living room and smoke around the fireplace.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the fireplace hearth and the flooring underneath on fire. Crews quickly deployed a 1 ¾” handline to attack the fire.

Crews were on scene for several hours, checking for hot spots and clearing smoke out of the structure.

An investigation was conducted after the fire to try and determine the cause and origin of the fire and is ruled accidental.

The occupants of the home were able to return safely, as the home only received minor damage from the fire.

The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department all responded to the incident.

Hays Fire Department encourages everyone during this winter to be cautious when using supplemental heat such as fireplaces and space heaters. Always follow best practices and manufacturers' recommendations for use.
