A request for variance on additional building wall signage is the subject of a public hearing scheduled for Sept.9 by the Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals.

Miller's of Claflin is asking for 493 square feet of additional wall signage on the north side of the building at 3300 Vine Street.

The applicant is in the process of remodeling the northern space, site of the former Hastings store, for an Ashley HomeStore distribution center and furniture clearance center.

According to Curtis Deines, PIE superintendent, the current sign regulation allows a maximum of 200 square feet of wall signage per façade.

The applicant is proposing two wall signs for their new business for visibility to customers from  I-70. The signs would be 270 square feet and 110 square feet.

The multi-tenant building houses Hobby Lobby, which has a sign on the north facade, and Westlake Ace Hardware.

City staff recommends approving the variance as submitted.
