A 34-year-old Hays man fell victim to a cryptocurrency-related scam, losing over $3,000 on Jan. 27.

Hays Police Lt. Brandon Wright said the man received a fraudulent check and was instructed to purchase gift cards as part of a supposed Bitcoin game payout.

The victim deposited the fake $3,000 check and spent the funds on gift cards, believing the money was part of his winnings, Wright said.

Wright said the victim bought $775 worth of gift cards and sent them to the scammer.

After the check was determined to be fraudulent, the bank reversed the deposit, resulting in an estimated loss of about $3,775 for the victim.
