GREAT BEND — A man was convicted of cruelty to animals and criminal trespass through a Barton County jury Tuesday.

In November, reports say Christopher Delauder went on his neighbor’s property and killed their Dalmatian. A report stated the incident occurred in Susank. At the time, Delauder had no explanation as to what prompted him to kill the dog. The dog was in a kennel when Delauder entered the kennel and stabbed it at least eight times, authorities said.

Following the presentation of evidence, the jury deliberated for approximately half an hour before returning the verdict.

Animal cruelty is a felony that can carry a sentence of up to one year in jail. Criminal trespass is a misdemeanor that can carry an additional six months in jail.

Sentencing is set for Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.

The State of Kansas was represented by Assistant Barton County Attorney Colin Reynolds. The defendant was represented by Bradley Steen.
