RUSSELL — At 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Russell Fire Department was dispatched to 930 N. Lincoln — the “old lumber yard” — for a report of a structure fire.
Crews arriving on scene observed a large vehicle storage shed on fire on the south side of the property.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly once access was gained.
The structure sustained significant damage and most of the contents on the west side of the building are a complete loss. Two vehicles were stored on the east side of the structure, and both received minimal damage, mainly from smoke and heat.
The railroad tracks that run along the south side of the property also had service suspended for an hour as crews had to use the ladder truck from across the tracks to provide water and aerial operations. This was due to the limited access that the property provided at the time of the fire.
Crews remained on scene for two hours performing overhaul and checking for fire extension.
The Russell Police Department, Russell Electric Department, Russell County 911 and Russell County EMS all assisted during the incident.
