HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs basketball teams split a home doubleheader with Hill City Friday night in their first Mid-Continent League games of the season.
GIRLS: TMP 66 Hill City 10
The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 23-2 run and
never trailed on their way to a 66-10 victory Friday night at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse.
Brooke Koengisman stole the opening tipoff and then knocked in the first of her three first quarter three pointers to put TMP (2-2, 1-0 MCL) up 5-0. A Claire Schippers field goal put TMP up 7-0.
Hill City (0-2, 0-2 MCL) got a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 7-2 but TMP answered with an 18-2 run to end the first quarter taking a 25-4 lead into the second quarter.
Koenigsman scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter.
After outscoring Hill City 25-4 in the first quarter, TMP outscored Hill City 18-2 in the second quarter building a 43-6 halftime lead.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter the Monarchs outscored Hill City 23-4 in the second half as they picked up their second win over the season.
Nine of the 11 Monarchs who played in the game scored.
BOYS: Hill City 65, TMP 55
The TMP boys jumped out to an early 8-0 lead only to see Hill
City hold the Monarchs scoreless in the second quarter and hold on down the
stretch for a 65-55 victory Friday.
Ian Nehls got the Monarchs (0-4, 0-1 MCL) off to a quick start, scoring nine of the first 12 points for TMP in a 12-6 lead. But down six Hill City began to chip away at the lead.
They briefly held a one-point lead and trailed by one at 15-14 after TMP’s Griffin Schumacher knocked in his first three pointer.
Down one Hill City (2-0, 2-0 MCL) put together a 21-3 run that ended the first quarter and encompassed the entire second quarter and opened the third quarter. Hill City went from down 15-14 to up 34-18.
After trailing by as many as 16 in the third quarter TMP began to chip away at the Hill City lead. They were able to do that in large part due to the effort of freshman Ty Schmeidler.
Schmeidler knocked down six three pointers in the second half and scored 20 of TMP’s 23 points to end the third quarter and open the fourth quarter.
TMP closed within five twice down the stretch but Hill City made enough free throws to secure their first win in 12 games against TMP 65-55.
Schmeidler led TMP with 20 points and Ian Nehls added 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Jaden Nuss led all scorers for Hill City with 27.
TMP will travel to Oakley on Tuesday.
