INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - On day one of the Midwest Classic (Dec. 17), Fort Hays State had three wrestlers get through to the second day of competition. Fourth-ranked Tereus Henry (197) guaranteed his placement in the top six in his weight class by reaching the semifinals, while Mason Turner (133) and Cade Lindsey (174) both remain alive in the consolation bracket. The Tigers have made a strong showing so far with 31 team points, ranking 17th in the tournament. The Tiger trio will compete on Sunday (Dec. 18) with action beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
Henry dominated his way to the semifinals winning each of his matches in bonus-point fashion. After a first period fall in the opening round, he scored a technical fall to reach the quarterfinals. Henry faced eighth-ranked Walker Uhl of Ashland to reach the semifinals and came out victorious with a 14-1 major decision. After entering the third-period leading only 1-0, Henry held Uhl down for the majority of the period and managed to turn him three different times to rack up some near-fall points. Uhl managed to escape late in the match, but Henry took him down again with four seconds remaining to secure his place in the semifinals. He will face Dalton Hahn of Upper Iowa for a chance at to reach the finals.
Turner reached the quarterfinals with a first period fall in the opening round before taking down 12th-ranked Kaden Anderlik of Upper Iowa in a 4-0 decision. In the quarterfinals, Turner faced 10th-ranked Reece Barnhardt from the University of Mary and fell just short of guaranteed placement in a 10-4 decision. He will start Sunday's action in the consolation bracket against JP Homfeld from Maryville.
Lindsey won his first match by technical fall before facing sixth-ranked Max Bruss of the University of Mary and missed the quarterfinals in a 7-5 decision. The first-year Tiger picked up wins by decision and first-period pinfall to remain in the consolation bracket. Lindsey will face eighth-ranked Jack Bond of Lander University to start Sunday.
Tony Caldwell finished the day 3-2 at 285 pounds. After winning his first round match by a first period fall, Caldwell dropped a tight 2-0 decision to Johnny Green of Ouachita Baptist. On the consolation side, Caldwell picked up two more bonus point wins with a 9-0 major decision and a pinfall, but his day came to an end against Ryan Herman of Maryville by fall in the first period.
Justus Hulse (149), Cody Hicks (157) and Bryce Westmoreland (184) all finished their day 1-2. Hicks won his first match in a preliminary matchup by a 7-2 decision to reach the 32-man bracket before falling to the 10th-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds. Westmoreland also won his prelim match via first period fall, but was unable to advance further. Hulse notched his win in the first round of consolation with a 13-6 decision over Zander Fields of Ouachita Baptist.
