Warm, windy, dry: Wildfire risk is high Wednesday

A red flag warning is in effect for a large portion of western Kansas Wednesday.

With continuing drought conditions and drying vegetation, windy conditions will heighten the risk of wildfires. Ellis County is in the "significant risk" category.

Winds in the Hays are are projected to be sustained at about 25 mph Wednesday, with gusts nearing 40 mph. Windy, warm conditions will continue through the day Thursday before a chance of rain arrived late Thursday night.

The afternoon highs are expected to be in the mid-70s to low-80s Wednesday and Thursday.
