Driver hospitalized after rear-end crash during chase

ELLIS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after noon Tuesday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Hyundai passenger vehicle driven by William O. Rhoads, 23, Edwardsville, Illinois, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Walker Avenue at a high rate of speed during a pursuit.

The Hyundai rear-ended a 2017 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by Peggy A. Southard, 68, Lawrence, then left the roadway to the north and overturned in the ditch

Southard maintained control of her vehicle and pulled to the westbound shoulder where she parked.

EMS transported Rhoads to Hays Medical Center. Southard and a passenger were not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

  The KHP did not release details on what prompted the chase.
