Cheryl S. Schlegel, 64, Alexander, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, at her home.

Cheryl was born September 5, 1956, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Donald Ralph and Enola Mae (Baker) Kirby.  She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  A 1974 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker and farm wife.

On November 14, 1981, she married Gene Schlegel at the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas. 

She and Gene worked side by side and built a life together on the farm.  She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Bazine, Kansas.  She served as the Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, a member of the Church Choir, and Church Secretary for many years.  She also served the community as an EMT, playing Taps for the Honor Guard, USD 395 School Board member, and an Election Board Official.  She supported her children in their many activities in school and 4-H.  She later became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, Kansas.  

Survivors include:  her husband, Gene Schlegel, Alexander, Kansas; son, Derrick Schlegel, Liebenthal, Kansas; daughter, Amanda Schmidtberger (Clay), Anson, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert Schlegel, Dylan Schlegel, Wyatt Schmidtberger, Morgan Schmidtberger, and Josephine Schmidtberger; a sister, Barbara Kirby, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and brother Doyle’s daughter, Paula Mackey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Doyle Kirby.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 31, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  

Funeral service will be Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 10:00 A.M. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with Reverend Randall Jahnke officiating.  Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander, Kansas.

Memorials are requested to the Alexander Fire Department, Alexander, Kansas, or the Rush County Fair Board, La Crosse, Kansas, or Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, Kansas.
