
Elizabeth "Liz" Knitter, 96, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2021, in Salina, KS. She was born November 10, 1925, in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, and graduated from Beloit High School. Liz remained in Beloit for ten years after high school, teaching in rural schools and working at R. L. Hamilton law firm before moving to San Bernardino, California. Liz worked as a legal secretary for 34 years. The last 18 years of her professional career were with the California State Appellate Courts. Liz joined Beta Sigma Phi sorority while living in Beloit and continued her involvement in California and Downs. She was a lifetime member and active at the local, council, and state levels.
Liz retired in 1988 and moved to Downs to be near family and friends. In retirement, Liz volunteered in many venues. She wrote for the local newspaper, presided over local judicial issues, and was an active artist with exhibits at the Dane G. Hansen Museum and the National Willa Cather Center in Red Cloud, NE. Liz taught various art workshops with area schools and Cloud County Community College. Liz supported Public Broadcast TV, Grassroots Art; Kansas Explorers Club; Kansas Sampler Foundation; and Solomon Valley Highway 24 Heritage Alliance. She loved her family, books, meeting people, good conversations, and traveling.
Liz is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Florence (McDaniels) Knitter, sisters Betty Lou Knitter and Phyllis DeBey, and brother-in-laws Marlow DeBey and Doug Terry. Survivors include her sister Kathie Terry of Hill City, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to Smoky Hills PBS or the Downs Christian Church. Domoney Funeral Home PO Box 127, Downs KS 67437, is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
