Ellis County fire crews responded to a semi-truck fire just after 5 p.m. Monday on Interstate 70 west of Hays.

According to Ellis County Assistant Fire Chief Lyle Pantle, the first crews arrived at mile marker 161 at 5:13 p.m. and found a fire on the axle of a truck hauling antique tractors.

Pantle said the driver was able to disconnect the truck from the trailer before crews arrived on the scene.

The fire was contained to the driver’s side rear axle of the vehicle.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in less than 10 minutes and Pantle said most of the damage was contained to the running gear of the vehicle.

After monitoring hotspots and cooling the area, crews left the scene just before 6 p.m.
