After an amicable discussion during last week's work session, Hays city commissioners this week will vote on whether to allow golf carts to be driven on public streets.

Low-speed vehicles are allowed by state law, while individual cities may decide whether to allow golf carts and if so, how to regulate them.

At the March 7 work session, the city commission directed staff to prepare an ordinance amendment allowing for the use of golf carts on public streets by drivers 18 and older with a valid driver's license. The golf cart must be insured. Staff also recommended requiring the vehicle be equipped with safety equipment, including seatbelts, signals, and lights, along with any additional equipment as required by state statute.

The commission will also vote on a recommended low bid from J Corp, Hays, for $759,955 to upgrade the waterline along Walnut Street between 11th and 17th Streets, including the 300 block of West 11th and the 400 block of West 17th.

The project replaces a 4-inch water main in residential areas with multiple breaks and quality issues in the past, said Jeff Crispin, water resources director.

The complete March 14 agenda is available here.

The meeting begins at 4 p.m. Thursday in Hays City Hall, 1507 Main.
