馃弨 Hays girls advance; boys season ends versus Goddard

HAYS - Hays High hosted both girls' and boys' sub-state opening round games on Wednesday night against Goddard. The boys would have opened postseason play on Tuesday but the matchup was moved to Wednesday since both the girls and boys were set to host the Lions.

Girls: [5] Hays 53, [12] Goddard 45, OT
It took an extra four minutes but #10 Hays High outlasted Goddard 53-45 in overtime to extend their season.

Hays jumped out to a 9-2 lead with an eight point run. That seven point advantage would be their largest for the remainder of regulation. Goddard would go on their own 9-0 run for an 11-9 Lion lead. The Indians scored as the first quarter expired to tie the game up at 11.

Hays trailed by one point early in the second but responded with a 7-0 run for a 20-14 lead with 5:32 left before halftime. Goddard got back within two points at 22-20 with 4:20 on the clock but the Lions didn't score for the remainder of the half. Hays could only muster one point themselves to lead 23-20 at halftime.

Goddard built their largest advantage of the game at 27-23 as the Indians didn't score a field goal for the first 4:25 of the third quarter. The defenses clamped down in the third quarter and Hays led 32-30 heading to the fourth.

The fourth quarter mimicked the second. Hays built a five point lead 43-38 with 3:46 remaining in regulation. The Indians though didn't score for the rest of regulation. Goddard tied the game with 1:27 left in the game. Each team had field goal attempts to win the game but neither connected.

Hays struck first in overtime and never trailed in the extra four minutes of basketball. Goddard did tie the game once at 45 with 1:15 remaining. Hays answered back on their next possession at 47-45. The Indians made all of their last six free throws of the game to win 53-45.

Hays has won 10-straight and improves to 16-5. They will play at Bishop Carroll Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the  5A Sub-State title game. The Golden Eagles beat Andover Central 49-41 Wednesday.

Goddard ends their season at 9-12.

Boys: [10] Goddard 53, [7] Hays 47
Goddard erased a nine point third quarter deficit on their way to a 63-47 win over Hays to advance to the sub-state championship game.

The two teams were deadlocked at five point through the first six minutes of the game. Goddard ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run for a 12-5 lead. 

Hays would fight back to tie the game at 15 three minutes into the second quarter. The Indians outscored the Lions 11-7 through the remaining five minutes of the quarter to lead 26-22 at the break. Hays had a 21-10 advantage in the second quarter.

The Indians came out of the locker room on a 7-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 33-24 forcing a Goddard time out. The rest of the game belonged to the Lions. 

Hays went without a field goal for the next 7:20. During that time Goddard went on a 21-3 run to build a 45-36 lead. Trailing by 13 points, Hays got a seven point possession to make one final push. Hays hit a three and as the ball was in the air a foul was called on Goddard. Hays scored on the inbound and was fouled. The free throw missed but was rebounded by the Indians and stuck back in for two points closing the gap down to 51-45 with just over three minutes left. 

It would be the Indians got rest of the night. Goddard made 12 of 13 fourth quarter free throws to win 63-47.

Hays ends the season at 13-8. Goddard improves to 13-8 and will play at Kapaun on Friday for a 5A State berth.
