K Ronald Somers, 87, of Russell, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

K was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Fredonia. He was the son of Rhea Moore and Thelma Doris (Davis) Somers. His dad was a teacher so during his childhood the family moved many times. He graduated from Bloom High School and attended a couple of years at Fort Hays State University.

K was united in marriage to Nancy Jo Brooks on May 22, 1953, in Dodge City.  They made their home in many locations including Ensign, Paradise, Natoma and Waldo. This union was blessed with four children; Gaylen, Debra, Bret and Kim.

K was a “Jack Of All Trades, Master Of All."  He was a manager for the American Energy Company  in Texas and New Jersey, was the owner and operator of Somers Plumbing & Repairs, and many other numerous jobs.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Hays; and a volunteer fireman in Waldo.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, being outdoors, woodworking and helping family and friends with their projects.

K’s surviving family include his wife of 67 years, Nancy of the home; daughters, Debra Chidester (Dale) of Leoti, Kansas and Kim Knipple (Charlie) of Houston, Texas; sons, Gaylen Somers (Julie) of Rigby, Idaho and Bret Somers (Julieta) of Natoma, Kansas; sisters, Monica Somers of Russell, Kansas and Joyce Barnes of Warrensburg, Missouri; 19 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. 

K was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lola Heath and Marilyn Barrett.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4 at Mt. Hermon Cemetery in Paradise, Kan. No visitation will be held.

A memorial has been established with Waldo Senior Center.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
