Larry Allen Towns, 71, of Colby, died Monday, July 5, 2021, at Hays
Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1949, in Thomas County, KS, to
Lawrence and Wilma (Kistler) Towns. Larry graduated from Colby High
School in 1967 and Kansas State University in 1971, with a degree in
Horticulture. He married Berna Wiens on April 13, 1969, in Colby. After
Larry graduated college, they moved back to Colby to farm the family
land he had cared for since the age of 15, when his father passed away.
Larry went on to grow his farming operation and on the first day of corn
harvest in 1985, he suffered a heart attack. This did not stop him
though. Larry served on the Mingo COOP Board, Farm Bureau Board and was
the president of the North Shore Cabin Area, at Cedar Bluff Lake. He was
baptized at the Winona United Methodist Church. Larry enjoyed snow
skiing, farming, fishing, lake time, and attending his grandchildren’s
sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Paul Pabst and sister Laura Hansen.
Larry is survived by his wife Berna; children, Tracy (Terry) Johnson, of
Holcomb, KS and Travis (Carrie) Towns, of Monument, KS; grandchildren,
Taylor and Tanner Johnson and Nathan Towns and siblings, Leroy (Jean)
Towns and Lois (Larry) Struckmeyer.
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2021, at Baalmann Mortuary,
Colby. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2021, also at the
Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Northwest Kansas Foundation for
