FREMONT, Neb. - The Fort Hays State University women's wrestling team turned in a strong performance on Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Midland Warrior Open in Fremont, Nebraska. Alexis Burton was the highest finisher for FHSU, taking second at 160, while Samara Markwardt (131) and Peyton Hellmann (138) finished third.
The Tigers had eight placers overall. Adding to the list of placers were Kaylan Hitchcock (4th – 145), Ashlynn Goodwin (5th – 138), Hayleen Martinez (5th – 180), Hailey Conley (6th – 207), and Addison Broxterman (6th – 131).
Burton powered her way to the finals with three straight wins, a decision and a pair of falls, before dropping a decision to Kami Senlycki of Grand View in the final. Hellmann recorded the most wins of any Tiger on the day, going 6-1. She had three falls and three tech falls for the day, running her season win total up to 22. Markwardt went 4-1 for the day, capping her tournament with a fall in her placement match.
Hitchcock and Goodwin each recorded five wins for the day, while Martinez and Broxterman each had four. Conley picked up three wins to secure placement.
With eight placers on Saturday, Fort Hays State has now had 50 placers over five tournaments this season.
