The 2023 version of the free liver and onions drive-through at Hays’ First Baptist Church is Thursday. This year, church members will cook and distribute 60 pounds of liver.

The 21 pounds of liver at the inaugural event in 2022 went in about 50 minutes.

Liver and onions with mashed potatoes and gravy will be available free as a drive-through at the church, 12th and Fort, beginning at 5 p.m.

Sometime around the opening at 5 p.m., two liver-and-onion unbelievers, Pastor Chris Prater and Hays Chamber President and CEO Sarah Wasinger, will be served.

“She said she would try it if I did,” Prater said.

The meal is free, but because some people were unhappy last year that they could not donate, a method for making donations will be available.

“I want to stress that we conceived the idea as an opportunity to serve the liver-and-onion lovers of the Hays area with a free meal,” Prater said. “This meal will be free, but those who insist on making a donation will be able to do so.”
