Fort Hays State had six members of its women's soccer team receive College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors for the 2023 season. This award honors a combination of academic and athletic accomplishments of the individuals selected.
Earning the honor for FHSU Women's Soccer this year were Emily Hutchings, Reilly Madden, Hannah Mares, Isabel Robben, Kintzli Wgner adn Megan Wiman. All six also were also All-MIAA selections this season and helped the Tigers to their second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament and fourth overall in program history. The Tigers finished the season at 13-5-3 overall. Hutchings, Madden, Mares, and Robben received Academic All-District honors for the second-straight year.
To be considered for Academic All-District selection, an individual must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, hold a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better, and compete in 90 percent of the team's contests or start at least 66 percent of contests at the time of nomination. A school can have a maximum of six selections for soccer, so FHSU reached the maximum allowed this year.
Hutchings is a three-time All-MIAA selection, twice as a midfielder and once as a defender. She was an All-MIAA First Team selection this year at defender. Hutchings played all but seven minutes of action this season, going the distance in 20 of 21 matches. She was also an All-MIAA Tournament selection for the second-straight year. Hutchings is a double major at FHSU in both Chemistry and Biology and holds a cumulative GPA of 3.95.
Madden is a four-time All-MIAA selection at defender, the first four-year all-conference honoree in program history. She anchored the Tiger defense that allowed just 0.67 goals per match in 2023 and produced 12 shutouts, which tied the school record for shutouts for a second-straight year. FHSU held opponents to one goal or less in 17 of 21 matches. She played all but nine minutes of action this season after playing every possible minute in 2022. Madden ranks second in program history for minutes played, logging 6,516 over her career. Madden was a double major undergraduate at FHSU in both Criminal Justice and Communications Sciences and Disorders. She is now in her first semester of working on a master's in Speech-Language Pathology. She had an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.94.
Mares is a two-time All-MIAA selection at forward. She tied for the team lead in goals (8) and points (16) this season. Even with the NCAA Tournament still in progress, Mares is the NCAA Division II national leader in shot accuracy, placing 76.3 percent of her shots on target this season. She produced the program's third hat trick in history with three goals against Southwestern College in 2023. Mares is a Management major at FHSU and holds a cumulative GPA of 3.89.
Robben is a two-time All-MIAA selection at goalkeeper. She was selected to the CSC Academic All-America First Team last year for her position. Robben finished the year with an 0.67 goals against average and .794 save percentage. She broke the FHSU single-season record for shutouts in a season with 12, topping a record of 11 she previously shared with two other players. Robben entered the NCAA Tournament as the national leader in goalkeeper minutes played and finished the season playing all 1,890 minutes possible for the Tigers. She also owns the school record for individual shutouts by a goalkeeper in a career with 23. Robben is a double major at FHSU in Accounting and Finance, holding a GPA of 3.85.
Wagner earned All-MIAA honors as a midfielder in her first year at FHSU after transferring from Northwest Missouri State. She played every regular season match, but unfortunately was unable to participate in postseason contests due to injury. She finished the year with three assists. Wagner is also a double major in Accounting and Finance at FHSU, holding a GPA of 3.90.
Wiman earned All-MIAA honors at defender in her second year on the pitch for FHSU. She played all but 29 minutes possible this season, playing the full length of time in 19 of 21 matches. She did not accumulate any points for the season, but put seven of her eight shots taken on goal. Wiman is a Health and Human Performance major with a 3.68 GPA.
