
Robert Wayne “Robbie” McGaughey, age 64, went to join his family at the “Big Dance” beyond the clouds on March 25, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. Robbie was born on April 21, 1957, in Hays, Kansas the son of Francis Paul “Frank” and Drewie Elaine (Robertson) McGaughey.
Robbie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Sons of the American Legion Post #59, both of McCracken. He was a graduate of the McCracken High School class of 1975. After high school he worked and lived on his family’s farm where he raised his two children until 1991 when his last son was to be born, he moved he and his family back into the town of McCracken.
Robbie worked in the oilfield for several companies over the years the longest being Abercrombie Drilling.
He ran “Mule Creek Kennels” where he bred and raised greyhounds, coon hounds, and bird dogs, and pack mules. While residing in the town of McCracken Robbie, Helena and their family ran “The Main Street Diner” until it caught fire in 1999. In 2004 they opened “The Mustang” another café where Rob was able to share his culinary talents with his many customers including his “Famous Prime Rib and Sunday fried chicken dinner buffet” until his health took precedence. For all those that truly knew Robbie they knew he had a heart of gold, caring for everyone, and making sure no one left his home unfed. He always said “You better go get you a plate, cause if your bashful around here all you’re gonna leave with is an empty stomach”
On September 1, 1982, he married Helena Showalter in LaCrosse, Kansas. She survives of the home. Born to this union were one daughter, and two sons, Ashley McGaughey and her husband, Richard Gonzales, of McCracken, Aaron McGaughey and his wife, Lesley, of LaCrosse, and Austin McGaughey; his granddogs, Dolly, Arrow, and Lokie, of McCracken; four grandchildren, Roman and Serenity Gonzales, Jackson and Lillian McGaughey; brothers-in-law, Richard Showalter and Terry Showalter and his wife, Helen; one niece, Amanda Showalter, one nephew, Jason Showalter, many great nephews, great nieces, and one great great niece, cousins, friends, as well as his many beloved canine companions, but most especially Toby, Gabby, and Molly.
Robbie was preceded in death by his parents, his cousin Robert Wayne Ramsey (whom he was named after), his brother-in-law, Johnny Mac Showalter, many aunts, uncles, cousins, his best friend Glenn "Smoe" Ryan, and his favorite coon hound Brandy.
A funeral mass will be held at the St Mary's Catholic Church, McCracken on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial in The McCracken City cemetery. The rosary will be held at the church on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 6:00 p.m.
