HAYS – The Hays High softball team waited out a two-hour weather delay due to lightning then lost 11-5 to rival Great Bend Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

The Panthers jumped out to the early lead with three in the third. The Indians rallied with a run in the fourth then three in the fifth to pull within 5-4. Alyse Zimmerman drove in the first run with a double. Brynlee Brous added a two-out, two-run single.

Great Bend answered with three in the sixth then three in the seventh.

Brous finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Riley Dreher went the distance and allowed the 11 runs on 19 hits.

Hays (9-6) has now lost five straight.

Game two was postponed due to weather and will be made up Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.
