John E. Liggett, 90, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

John was born December 26, 1932, in Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Jerry Simpson and Edna Mae (West) Liggett.  He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  

A 1950 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he was employed for 43 years by Farmer’s Co-op, Rush Center, Kansas.  The last 28 years, he was the general manager before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, previously serving as a lector and church greeter, and American Legion Post #0033, both of La Crosse, Kansas.  He was also a member of Walnut Valley Senior Center, Walnut Valley Masonic Lodge #215, and a longtime member of the Rush Center Pinochle Club, all of Rush Center, Kansas.  He was a former board member for Center Township, and a former cemetery sexton for Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, Kansas.  John was a proud La Crosse Leopards supporter and a school bus driver for 13 years for the Leopards/USD #395.

John loved gardening, fishing, golfing and playing softball.  He was a passionate KU Jayhawks and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Every year the family Christmas tree was lovingly set up and decorated by John.

On May 20, 1957, he married Rita I. Depperschmidt at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.  

Survivors include  his wife, Rita Liggett, Rush Center, Kansas; two sons, Jeff Liggett (Kathleen), Parker, Colorado, and Allan Liggett (Brooke), Springfield, Missouri; one  daughter, Lorna Herrman (Carl), La Crosse, Kansas; six grandchildren, John Gilbert Herrman (Kyle), Megan Hernandez (Ziv), Tyler Liggett, Catherine Liggett, Kennedy Liggett, and Monroe Liggett; six great-grandchildren, Selah Herrman, Carl Herrman, Gavan Middleton, John Eric Herrman, Claire Herrman, and Jax Hernandez; and one sister, Judy McCoy, Overland Park, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vernon Leroy Liggett, Duane A. “Jake” Liggett, and Donald L. “Donnie” Liggett; and three sisters, Doris Witthuhn, Sharon Mendenhall, and Lorna Mae Liggett.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 18, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m.  

Church visitation will be Monday, June 19, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Monday, June 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating.  Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, or Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas.
