🏀TMP girls secure share of MCL title; boys win it outright with wins at Plainville

PLAINVILLE – Both the TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams wrapped up Mid-Continent League titles Tuesday night with a pair of big wins over the Plainville Cardinals.

Girls: TMP 100, Plainville 20
The TMP Lady Monarchs made a season-high 13 3-pointer field goals and five players scored in double-figures as they reached the century mark in a 100-20 win over Plainville.

TMP (17-3, 10-1 MCL) seniors Emilee Lane and Sophia Balthazor scored 12 first quarter points each as the Monarchs outscored the Cardinals (0-20, 0-11 MCL) 37-2 in the first quarter.

Balthazor scored 12 more of her game-high 29 points in the second quarter as the Monarchs pulled away for a 66-11 halftime lead.

The Monarchs outscored Plainville 34-9 in the second half on their way to a 100-20 victory.

Sophia Balthazor led all scorers with a career-high 29 points. Emilee Lane finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jaci VonLintel added 16 points and Brooke Koenigsman added a career-high 12 points.

With the win the Monarchs clinched a share of the MCL regular season title with Smith Center and Phillipsburg. All three teams finished with a 10-1 record.

This season marks the fourth time since TMP joined the MCL, that they won both the MCL tournament and regular season title. It’s the first time since 2018.

Boys: TMP 59, Plainville 39
The TMP boys opened the game on a 17-5 run and Dylan Werth scored 24 points to lead the Monarchs to a 59-39 win Tuesday in Plainville. The win secures the MCL regular season title for the Monarchs.

TMP (16-4, 10-0 MCL) got out to a quick start, scoring the games first nine points. Kade Harris scored eight first quarter points helping the Monarchs build a 12-point first quarter lead at 19-7. TMP led by 10 after one quarter at 21-11.

Leading 27-16 early in the second quarter Plainville (8-13, 2-8 MCL) cut the lead to four at 27-23.

After a TMP timeout, Dylan Werth scored a layup and helped TMP close the first half on a 6-2 run to put the Monarchs up 33-25 at halftime.

TMP used a 12-2 run to start the second half and rebuild a double-digit lead in the third quarter. TMP led 47-35 through three quarters.

The Monarchs then outscored Plainville 12-4 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 59-39 win.

Dylan Werth and Plainville’s Anders Dewey each scored 24 points.

Gavin Unrein scored 14 points and Kade Harris added 13 points for the Monarchs.

Werth and Jace Wentling each pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

With the win TMP claimed their second MCL title in three years and their fifth overall. Its also the fourth time that TMP has won both the MCL tournament and the regular season title.
