The former WaKeeney police chief has pleaded not guilty to charges of mistreatment of a suspect and two counts of battery.

Michael Allen Romero was put on administrative leave in March and ultimately removed as police chief.

Romero appeared in court on Tuesday in front of District Judge Tom Drees for a status conference on his case.

On Jan. 19, 2025, Romero allegedly battered Steven Michael Balock.

Balock was facing charges of mistreatment of an animal and interference with a law enforcement officer. Both charges were dropped by the prosecutor, according to court records.

In addition to Romero's plea, his defense entered a notice of appearance of an expert witness.

Brian O’Donnell will give his professional opinion on Romero's actions as a law enforcement officer, according to court records.

He will testify that, based on his extensive training and experience in the practice of use of force, Romero’s practices were proper and legitimate for law enforcement purposes, court documents said.

Romero has waived his right to a speedy trial.

His jury trial is set for June 23.
