Hays set another record high for the second day in a row on Monday with a high of 82 degrees, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.
Those warm temperatures are not set to last.
By midday, the high is forecast to reach 66 degrees, but as a cold front blows in, temperatures are forecast to drop 49 degrees to a low of 17 overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
There's a slight chance of snow between 7 and 10 p.m.
The front will aggravate the critical fire weather conditions expected across roughly the southern half of the area. Open burning is strongly discouraged areawide.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect this afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 49 mph.
Temperatures will rebound to the 50s and 60s on Thursday and Friday. It is forecast to remain breezy through the week with no chances of precipitation. Saturday's high is forecast for 75 degrees.
