🏀TMP basketball teams finish second at Hays City Shootout

HAYS – The TMP girls picked up a win Saturday over the Hays High Indians while the Monarch boys came up short in their matchup as both teams wrap up the Hays City Shootout with a second-place finish.

The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 13-5 run to open the second half on their way to a 44-31 win over the Indians Saturday at the Hays City Shootout.

Both teams offense struggled to start the game and Hays built an early 5-3 lead but TMP was able to tie the game at six and then again at eight before Hays’ Aleyia Ruder got a layup as the first quarter ended that put Hays up 11-8 through one quarter.

Into the second quarter TMP’s Sophia Balthazor hit her first of a pair of three-pointers in the game tying the game at 11.

There would be three more ties in the second quarter before TMP’s Meagan Hamel jumper put TMP up 19-17. The lead 19-18 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, with TMP leading 22-18, the Monarchs Kyleigh Allen scored five straight as TMP built their lead to seven at 27-20. The extended the lead to 32-22 on a Hamel three. That was all part of a 13-5 run by the Monarchs to open the second half as they built the lead to 32-23 to end the third quarter.

After trailing by 10 in that third quarter Hays was able to trim the deficit back to nine briefly to open the fourth quarter but TMP scored six straight and led 42-27 and would close out the game winning 44-31.

Game highlights

TMP was led by the nine points each of Emilee Lane and Kyleigh Allen. Hamel and Kassidi Yost each added eight.

The Monarchs finished the Hays City Shootout 2-1 and finished as the runner-up.

Boys: Hays 70, TMP 42

The Hays High Indians used runs over 15-0 and 16-0 on their way to a70-42 win over the TMP-Marian Monarchs in the final game of the Hays City Shootout Saturday at Hays High School.

TMP opened the game with back-to-back three pointers from Jackson Schulte and Lucas Lang, the first of his eight three’s, to build an early 6-4 lead but Hays High came back to take an 8-6 lead.

Lang added his second first quarter three-pointer to put TMP back up one at 9-8. They extended their lead to 11-8 before Hays High strung together a 13-0 run to end the first quarter to lead 21-11.

They added two more to open the second quarter to cap off their 15-0 run to lead 23-11.

TMP was able to trim the lead back to three at 26-23 after Lucas Lang hit three more three pointers in the quarter.

With Hays High up 28-23 Bryce Seib tipped in his own miss, to beat the buzzer, at the end of the first-half as Hays High led 28-25 at the break.

In the second half Hays High scored 16 straight to open the third quarter taking a 44-23 lead.

Lang added two more three’s to end the quarter before Hays took a 52-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter Lang added his eighth three pointer for a team-high 24 points as Hays claimed the 70-42 win.

Game highlights

Lang’s 24 points was a new career-high. Jackson Schulte finished nine.

TMP finished the tournament 2-1 and in second place.

The Monarchs will travel to Hill City next Friday to open Mid-Continent League play.
