WICHITA– Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland honors Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from Goodland and Atwood, among 10 Gold Award Girl Scouts in total from across the state to be recognized during an online ceremony on Thursday, July 16.

Earning the Gold Award is one of the most challenging, exciting and rewarding experiences a Girl Scout can have and one of the most prestigious recognitions she’ll accomplish.

The Girl Scout Gold Award stands as the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, comparable to the Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts.

The award recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through Take Action projects that have a sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Girl Scout Gold Award recipients who join the armed forces enter one rank higher than other recruits, and they qualify for exclusive scholarships.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly the mark of the remarkable, and the young women who earn this award exemplify leadership in all of its forms,” said Liz Workman, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. “They saw a need in their communities and around the world, and took action. Their extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership is making the world a better place.”

Girl Scouts Ashtin McClung, Goodland, and Dalyn McFee , Atwood, will be recognized for their tremendous displays of leadership this Thursday evening during a council-wide online ceremony.

Aware that several communities in her county lacked access to public libraries, McClung went to work and devised a plan to make a change.

She constructed three Little Free Libraries and placed them in Kanorado and Edson benefiting their communities through increased access to reading materials. Working with the Goodland Public Library, she created a process to keep the libraries stocked with books throughout each year.

After an opportunity to work with children in foster care through Girl Scouts, McFee took her efforts to the next level and earned the Gold Award.

She developed "Snuggle and Read," a program focused on providing books and blankets to children moving into new foster homes.

McFee placed donation boxes at local church and several businesses, activating the support of community members through the collection of books and blankets. Coordination with local social workers and ministries allowed her the opportunity to donate bags filled with books and blankets.
