UPDATE: Wildfire reported in northern Ellis Co. under control

UPDATE 8 p.m.:

A grass fire that had earlier in the afternoon grown to around 3 miles wide near 310th Ave. and Codell Rd. is now "95 percent" under control, according to Ellis County Sherriff Scott Braun.

At this time, there is no immediate danger to the public, he said.

As fire crews continue to work the fire line and mop up hot spots, Braun said area residents are asked to avoid travel in the area, however, those living in the area may return to their homes.

At that time there were no reports of structure damage or injuries due to the fire, he said.

A large grass fire was reported north of Hays around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The fire was more than 3 miles wide and moving north at a high rate of speed near the intersection of 310th Ave. and Codell Rd., according to Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun.

He said the fire was growing at that time, and residents in the area have been asked to evacuate and avoid traveling in the area.
