Shelby Thornton

Shelby Thornton, age 57, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. He was born April 17, 1963, to Eloise (Francis) and Dean Thornton, in Norton, KS. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education.

Shelby greatly enjoyed teaching, and throughout his career he worked in the La Crosse, Linn and Hanover, WaKeeney, Palco, and Hill City schools. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the KNEA, and greatly enjoyed doing sports stats and serving as an umpire. Shelby genuinely loved supporting and being involved with the local youth and serving his community.

Shelby is survived by his parents; son Mason Thornton of Great Bend, KS; daughters Kayla Thornton of Great Bend, and Shari (Tony) Weber of Merriam, KS; grandchildren Blake, Paighton, and Anthony; brother Shon (Karen) Thornton of Garden City, KS; and sister Shannon Thornton of Bison, KS. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Brittani.

Per his wishes, no public services will be held for Shelby. Memorials are suggested to Trego Recreation Commission (TRC). Donations may be sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th Street WaKeeney, KS 67672.
