TOPEKA – The Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Board on Monday unanimously approved an alternative season model for sports and activities for schools that opt out of participation this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The proposal will now go before the KSHSAA Board of Directors where they will vote on Friday to either adopt or reject the plan.
“The model would provide an opportunity for students in our member schools unable to play in the months ahead with an opportunity to benefit from interscholastic activity participation when it is appropriate in their school communities later this school year” said KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick in a release.
The proposal can be reviewed here: Proposed Alternative Fall Season
Even if approved, over half of either 1A, 2A and 3A schools or half of 4A, 5A and 6A schools in any particular sport or activity must choose to participate for the alternative plan in that sport or activity to take place.
Championships will not change under the proposal. Schools that opt for the alternative model will not be eligible for state competition.
KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick says no decisions will be made on fall championships until they are a month away.
