AZUSA, Calif. - Two more school records went down for the Fort Hays State track and field teams on day two of the Bryan Clay Invitational. Mattie Rossi smashed her own record in the heptathlon, while Nolan Churchman easily topped the best mark in school history in the decathlon.
Rossi completed the heptathlon with 5,214 points, 230 more than her previous school record set last season. She was 16th overall, including finishing third amongst DII athletes. The junior cleared 18-4.5 in the long jump for 729 points before finishing things off with a time of 2:18.35 in the 800m run, good for 846 points. Rossi is the first athlete in program history to surpass the 5,000-point mark in the heptathlon.
Churchman compiled 7,119 points across the 10 events of the decathlon, 144 more than the previous school record. He is the first Tiger to break the 7,000-point threshold in the event. Churchman's top events on day two included the 110m high hurdles, where he totaled 781 points with a time of 15.58, and the pole vault, where he grabbed 746 points after clearing the 14-7.25 bar.
Taylor Savolt also surpassed the NCAA DII provisional qualifying threshold in the heptathlon, finishing 34th overall with a total of 4,894 points. That score lifts Savolt to second place on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the heptathlon. Jack Pakkebier finished just below the qualifying mark in the decathlon, placing 22nd with 6,335 points.
Three Tigers ran amongst a total of 196 athletes in the men's 800m competition, with two posting provisional performances. Ethan Lang was 26th overall and seventh amongst DII athletes with a time of 1:49.48, good for the second-fastest time at FHSU during the DII era. Aaron Mangan also surpassed the provisional pace, finishing 54th with a time of 1:51.18. That time places Mangan sixth on the DII era performance list at FHSU. Trever Medina was just off the provisional time after crossing the line in a personal-best 1:51.72. Medina is seventh on the DII era list, just behind Mangan.
Abigail Stewart began the day with a time of 36:54.81 in the 10,000m run, finishing 10th in the open division. She is now second on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the long-distance race.
The Tigers will wrap up competition in California with 33 entries on the third and final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational, while the rest of the squad heads to Kearney, Neb. for the Loper Invitational on Friday (April 15).
