The city of Hays Parks Department will began its annual process of winterizing and closing public restrooms in most city parks starting on  Monday.

This standard seasonal procedure is necessary to protect the plumbing and infrastructure from damage caused by freezing temperatures.

All but one of the restroom facilities located throughout the city's extensive park system are not equipped with heating.

As temperatures drop below freezing, water lines and fixtures are at high risk of bursting, which can lead to significant and costly damage.

"Our primary goal is to be responsible stewards of the public's assets," said Jeff Boyle, director of parks for the city of Hays. "Closing these unheated facilities is a necessary, proactive step. It ensures that we protect our infrastructure from the harsh realities of a Kansas winter and prevents expensive, emergency repairs."

The process of winterizing the numerous restrooms across the city is a time-intensive task for park crews.

Beginning Monday, staff will work sequentially through the parks to shut off water, drain all pipes, and secure the buildings for the season.

Due to the scale of the park system, residents may notice this process taking place over the course of several days.

There is one exception to the seasonal closures. The public restroom facility located at Union Pacific Park, 10th and Main, which is equipped with a heating system, will remain open and fully operational for public use throughout the entire winter season.

"We understand that this transition can be an inconvenience for park users who enjoy our green spaces well into the colder months," Boyle said. "Our crews work diligently to keep parks accessible and safe year-round and wait as long as possible each year to close the restroom facilities. We deeply appreciate the public's understanding and patience as we complete this process."

The city of Hays apologizes for any inconvenience this seasonal closure may cause. The restrooms will be reopened in the spring as weather permits, typically in April.
