
On
Tuesday, March 16th, 2021, Gary Keith Overmiller, loving father,
grandfather, father-in-law, brother, and uncle passed away at age 83. He
passed away peacefully at his home in Grand Island, Nebraska.
He was born December 9, 1937, on the family farm in Smith Center,
Kansas to Guy and Inez (Barrett) Overmiller. He is the third of six
children. He was raised on the family farm and went to a one-room school
house in Thornburg from first grade through eighth grade then attended
Smith Center High School where he graduated in 1956. Shortly after
graduating from High School he joined the Navy. He got married to Louise
Scott in 1961 and from that union he had one child, son Kerry
Overmiller.
Gary retired from the Navy after 20 years. A few years later he
worked for the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and retired in
Grand Island, Nebraska. His hobbies were skeet shooting and square
dancing. He traveled to San Antonio, Texas to participate at the World
Skeet Shoot for 15 years and won various medals. In conjunction with the
skeet shooting, he spent time with his grandchildren in San Antonio,
Texas. His love for square dancing caused him to travel throughout the
state of Nebraska.
He is known for his dry humor that he inherited from his uncles. He had a big heart and was kind with a compassionate sprit.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Guy, mother, Inez and his
nephew Matthew Overmiller. He is survived by his son Kerry, his
daughter-in-law Diane, his grandchildren, Justin of San Antonio, TX,
Andrew and wife Lauren of Windsor CO, Hannah of Grand Island, NE, his
brother’s and sister’s Louis and wife Marilyn of Smith Center, Virginia
Cates of Belleville, KS, Joyce Jones of Smith Center, Lois and husband
Duane Unger of Colby, KS, Larry and wife Donna of Haysville, KS, and
several cousins, nieces and nephews.
