LIBERAL – The Hays High baseball team had already wrapped up their fourth straight Western Athletic Conference title earlier in the season, Thursday they closed out the WAC portion of their schedule with a 20-1 rout of Liberal in three innings at the National Beef Sports Complex.
Hays (14-8, 11-1 WAC) scored 14 runs in the second inning and six in the third to finish off the three-game series sweep of Liberal (8-17, 4-8 WAC). The Indians out-hit the Redskins 12-3 and took advantage of eight walks.
Jalen Smith and Carter Graham both hit grand slams. Graham went 4-for-4 and drove in six runs.
Trenton Welch allowed one hit with two strikeouts and three walks over two innings and picked up the win. Kal Lonsdale pitched the final inning.
UP NEXT
Hays will wrap up the regular season at home on Friday with a doubleheader against Junction City. Game one begins at 4:00 p.m. at Leo-Harper Field.
