Work on a project that will close a portion of U.S. 281 in Russell County is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 18.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will close 11 miles of U.S. 281 north of Russell, starting near Land Road and ending at the west K-18 junction. Project work will include reconstruction of the roadway into a 30-foot paved surface with 3-foot turf shoulders.

During construction, motorists will be directed onto a signed detour using K-18, K-232 and I-70. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year, conditions permitting.

This 11-mile portion is the final part of the delayed T-WORKS project to rehabilitate and reconstruct the U.S. 281 corridor between Russell and K-18. Reconstruction of the initial 4 miles from Russell and Land Road was completed in late 2021.

Sporer Land Development of Oakley is the primary contractor for the $36 million project. For more information, contact KDOT area construction engineer Mitchel Johnson at 785-261-6135 or [email protected].
